ImageBlue Care will help ease the growing demand for Queensland Health hospital services when it introduces a new service - Blue Care Hospital in the Home - from January 2014. The new service which is a partnership between Blue Care and the Queensland Government, will allow eligible patients to be treated for acute conditions in their own home as an alternative to being treated in hospital. The first areas to have Blue Care Hospital in the Home will be Townsville and Brisbane’s south and Bayside suburbs.Blue Care Executive Director Robyn Batten said that this could be expanded across the state. Blue Care operates in more than 80 locations across Queensland, directly touching the lives of more than 60 000 people each year,” Robyn said.Blue Care Hospital in the Home complements our existing high quality care and support services to provide a tailor made approach to caring for a person at home. The care received through the service is comparable with the care received as a hospital in-patient.

“Benefits include the ability for patients to remain in the comfort of their own home, be actively involved in their own care, and have visits from family and friends at any time. “Participation is voluntary and is provided free of charge to eligible Queensland Health patients of any age. It is a cost-effective care option to assist with managing the growing demand on hospital services and beds. “The service will work alongside hospital medical practitioners to provide eligible patients with vital support which they would otherwise receive as an inpatient in hospital,” she said.Blue Care Hospital in the Home services may include: · attending to skin infections· providing treatment for blood clot/s in the lungs or legs· providing treatment for urinary tract infections· treatment for lung infectionsReferrals for the service will be made by the hospital in each of the selected areas of operation. The services provided may vary in between hospitals. More information about Blue Care Hospital in the Home will be made available via the Blue Care website at www.bluecare.org.au.
